Panel OKs T plan to buy new buses

An independent panel has OK'd the MBTA's decision to buy electric-diesel hybrid buses for the South Boston transitway, but said they're probably just a short-term solution.

``Even though the MBTA's chosen alternative is a reasonable choice today, it may not be the best choice ... perhaps (five) years from now,'' wrote a special group assigned to study the 60-foot ``dual-mode'' buses.

The 24 buses - which the T is buying for $38 million - will run from South Station into South Boston and on to Logan Airport as part of the second leg of the T's new Silver Line. The findings, released in the panel's final report yesterday, was hailed by T officials.
